This is why I feel very fortunate to be living in a rural country setting with low population numbers. We aren't immune to the virus, we do have a couple in this county (thankfully not near my city), but people are staying home and not wandering out. Most of us, have already stocked up for at least a month's supply of what will be needed.
An older friend of mine lives in Brooklyn and usually works in Manhattan. He's not wealthy but he has owned a home in Greene County for thirty years or so and has visited it regularly over the years, sometimes living there for a few months at a time. He pays the usual taxes both in Greene County and in Kings County. When he visits his Greene County home he buys whatever he needs locally, and when he needs home repairs he hires the local talent. Unfortunately several years ago his spleen was surgically removed, leaving his immune system compromised. Given the virus situation in NYC, he went to his home in Greene County and isolated himself for over two weeks, no problem. So who's to tell this man and his family that they shouldn't go to his own home in Greene County where he is much, much safer?
Our summer home is our pavilion in the middle of our yard! Must be nice!
Same issues in DE. Only a few very small regional hospitals in the entire state, and suddenly it’s like Labor Day, July 4 and Memorial Day weekends rolled into one.
Should have stocked a yacht and set sail in December and not make land fall until this summer some time.
I life rural Midwest. Been living out in the sticks in premium country in a beautiful log cabin type home on a 17 acre parcel for years since I wanted to get away from the urban madness. Don’t get me wrong I like nyc etc but I love this peace way more than that. And me and my neighbors own guns and we target practice in our backyard so it makes for an even safer neighborhood. This event now makes me even more grateful for living out in the country. God I cannot imagine how paranoid Id have been if I was in a bit city right now cooped up in an apartment. Stay safe my urban and rural friends.
Seeing similar clashes at Lake of The Ozarks with St Louisans & KC residents retreating to their lake homes and the locals whining about them hoarding all the groceries. To their credit, most of the locals have stepped up to defend them & correctly point out it's other locals who've cleaned out the stores while the part-timers have for the most part brought supplies with them.
I live in Park City, Utah, home to Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley. Once the resorts closed early, most seasonal and part-time folks left. The streets are deserted. The virus spread here rapidly with almost 100 cases and counting, in a full-time county population of about 42,000. Luckily we have a great hospital and really good health care for a community of our size with at least 2 virus testing locations, one of which does not require a doctor's order. Our economy is tourist driven and hopefully, the summer season won't be a complete bust, but the idea of overwhelming our local resources is also a fear. The county commission is shutting us down at midnight tonight with all but essential travel prohibited. It's also asked the part-timers to stay away until at least the end of May.
The 2nd homes are functioning as they are supposed to--a get away from the primary spot and an option if something happens...well, folks the SOMETHING is happening. I worry about spread but this is what the contingency plan looks like when put into play. Human nature. I hope they will be considerate, bring what they need to not overwhelm the stores and stay at their own homes.
i live in pa. and in the last week i have seen many NEW YORK and NEW JERSEY plates showing up here. I suppose they want to share!!
I live in a very liberal area of New Jersey not particularly close to New York. You should have seen all woke people hoarding staples and loading up their SUVs and even getting into arguments in supermarkets. To the point that the one I used actually had to hire security to roam the isles. And it is the midst of multiple colleges and universities. Demonstrated their real concern for their fellow man. Nil.
