It’s a question each and every one of us has asked ourselves countless times before: “What’s the absolute most I would pay for a game-slobbered-in mouthguard discarded by Stephen Curry?” Your mileage may vary, of course — let’s just say that I have a number in mind and I haven’t hit it yet — but for one eager consumer who was champing at the bit to bid on the Golden State Warriors star and two-time NBA MVP’s gob-guard, the figure evidently tops your man Andre Benjamin.

A Stephen Curry mouthguard found by a fan at a Golden State Warriors road game in December was sold for $3,190 on Sunday morning in an online auction.

California-based SCP Auctions handled the sale. In June, SCP vice president Dan Imler said he expected the mouthguard to sell for at least $5,000.

See, now if Imler and company had snagged the mouthpiece that Steph chucked in frustration at a dude sitting in the front row at Game 6 of the 2016 NBA Finals, they’d definitely have topped five grand from some enterprising Cleveland Cavaliers fan intent on ensuring that nobody ever forgets how the Warriors blew a 3-1 lead to squander their chance at back-to-back titles and the greatest season in NBA history. Oh, well. Maybe next year.

No word yet on whether SCP, disappointed that the final bid on its existing MVP paraphernalia came up short of its initial lofty expectations, intends to consign a game-used Kevin Durant mouthpiece in auction free agency to up the ante for the next go-round, or how the auction community will respond to the potential rise of a new super-spit-shield team on the bidding block.
