Ways to celebrate Earth Day in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Earth Day has been celebrated each year on April 22 in the U.S. since 1970 to raise awareness about the need to protect our natural resources for future generations. This year, there are several ways for people to participate in the movement either as an individual or with a group.

San Diego EarthFest

On Saturday, April 20, more than 100 vendors will convene at Balboa Park for San Diego EarthFest. The free celebration features environmental, animal rescue and conservation groups as well as music and activities for families. The event will be held on the lawn located at Park Boulevard and Presidents Way.

San Diego County Library will be placing signs featuring pages from popular children’s books in some county parks during Earth Week from April 20-27. The signs can be found in the following parks:

Take a stroll through the flower fields

There are plenty of natural sights in San Diego County to appreciate on Earth Day. Whether you prefer viewing a sea of yellow wildflowers in the wilderness or don’t mind walking through the bustling crowds to take in the colorful Ranunculus at the Carlsbad Flower Fields, there are plenty of spots to find spring blooms throughout the county. Attend a dance party at Birch Aquarium

The Birch Aquarium is hosting a family-friendly event called Party for the Planet, which features an hourly dance party and interactive learning stations on April 20-21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The celebration also includes improvisational performances by Imagine Theatre Company and The Chrysalis: Monarch Center for the Arts. Attendance for the event is included with aquarium admission.

Visit the WorldBeat Center

The WorldBeat Center’s Multi-Cultural Earth Day celebration on Sunday, April 21 will surround themes of climate resilience and food sovereignty. Guest speakers will talk about the importance of access to healthy foods and creating eco-friendly habits. This annual event, which takes place between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., will also feature family-friendly music and dancing as well as local vendors.
