The Way You Watch TV Could Be Giving You "Netflix Face"

From Good Housekeeping

We all know the feeling: You're on the fifth episode of your favorite new show, and you know you should just turn it off but you can't quiiite bring yourself to stop watching. Well, fellow binge-watchers, we've got some bad news: On top of taking up a whole lot of time, taking in too much TV can do some serious damage to your skin, according to experts.

"There seems to be emerging evidence that light from cell phones and computer screens, which is referred to as high energy visible (HEV) light, can in fact penetrate into the deeper levels of the skin," Dr. Justine Hextall, a dermatologist based in the UK, told the Daily Mail. She warns that this can result in free radical damage, which can lead to wrinkles and sunspots and what Dr. Hextall refers to as "Netflix face," complete with fine lines and sagging skin.

Even worse: If you're using your phone or laptop outside, you could potentially be exposed to an extra dose of UVA and UVB light as a result of your screen reflecting it onto your face. "This increased concentration of UV exposure along with the exposure to HEV light is prompting experts to strongly recommend covering up skin and wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen whilst using them outside," says Dr. Hextall.

If you're planning on heading out into the sunshine and taking your laptop or phone with you for entertainment, use a sunscreen that offers broad spectrum protection of at least SPF 30, and reapply it every two hours.
