Nov. 11—Athens State University announced today that Philip Way is stepping down as president after six years with the university to "rebalance" his life.

State Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, chairman of the Athens State Board of Trustees, called a special meeting of the board's Executive Committee for 3 p.m. Monday to accept Way's resignation.

Way's last day is Dec. 31. He was appointed ASU's 37th president in May 2018.

Orr said the university's bylaws say Catherine Wehlburg, provost and vice president for academic affairs, will become acting president Jan. 1.
