Water pipe burst causes NSU students to evacuate overnight

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Students at Norfolk State University (NSU) had to evacuate early Friday morning due to a water pipe bursting.

According to officials, the Babbette Smith South Residence Hall had to be evacuated overnight to the Robinson Technology Building. Students were eventually transferred to local hotels between 4-6:30 a.m.

Video from a WAVY 10 viewer shows water pouring out in the men’s restroom, coming from one of the urinals.

A separate WAVY 10 viewer sent video of the flooding, showing water spread out throughout the hallway.

Power has been shut off on the residence hall, and students are currently unable to reenter the building.

NSU police, emergency services and disaster restoration are working to address the situation.

According to officials, students are expected to reenter their rooms by Friday afternoon.
