What is Zootopia about?

This 2016 Disney Animation film is as funny as it is adorable, but it deals with some pretty serious real-world themes. Main character Judy Hopps is an anthropomorphic rabbit (and cop) living in a world filled with other such animals, who coexist in a civilized, bureaucratic society not dissimilar to our own.

When a number of animals classified as predators go missing, Judy’s given 48 hours to find one of them—a river otter named Emmitt—if she wants to keep her job. Before long, Judy uncovers a conspiracy involving neurotoxins, hidden laboratories, and anti-predator prejudice.

Zootopia started off as an animated comedy about a city full of talking animals. Then it found a deeper side as a slightly subversive study on tolerance and diversity,” USA Today’s Brian Truitt said in 2016. “It might be a society full of all creatures great and small, but at the core of Disney’s Zootopia… are very real-world human issues tackled by a plot that features rookie rabbit cop Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and fast-talking fox con artist Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman).”

Zootopia grossed more than $1.02 billion globally. The movie stars Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, Nate Torrence, Bonnie Hunt, Don Lake, Tommy Chong, J. K. Simmons, Octavia Spencer, and Alan Tudyk.
