WATCH: Wind damages roof of Gardner Fire Department

Strong winds damaged a portion of the Gardner Fire Department’s roof early Thursday morning

A portion of the roof was blown off at 1:50 a.m., when the department’s wind gauge measured a gust of about 60 miles per hour, according to Mayor Michael Nicholson.

“Emergency repairs are being made to protect the building with the upcoming rain predicted for this weekend, and we are in contact with our insurance company for a longer term solution,” Nicholson said.

No fire personnel were injured and no equipment was damaged as a result of the incident, officials said.

Members of the fire department responded to several storm-related calls. according to Chief Greg Lagoy, including arcing wires on a telephone pole on Warwick Rd., a blown transformer at Ovila Case Playground, and downed branches that cut off electrical service to a residence on Chestnut St.

The windy conditions through the overnight hours also knocked out power, toppled trees, damaged fences, and blew down a portion of the CVS sign facade into the parking lot.
