WATCH: Utah’s Hogle Zoo lion makes pick for Super Bowl winner

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Utah’s Hogle Zoo’s resident Super Bowl predictor is looking to reclaim his throne for accurate predictions by choosing who he thinks will win at this weekend’s big game.

Vulcan, a 12-year-old African Lion, was known for his undefeated streak in picking a Super Bowl winner. Since coming to Utah in 2014, Vulcan has made three Super Bowl predictions. In 2015, he correctly predicted the New England Patriots would win and in 2022 he accurately predicted the Los Angeles Rams.

The lion’s streak came to an abrupt end in 2023, however, after he chose the Philadelphia Eagles to win the big game over the Kansas City Chiefs.

This year, Vulcan had the choice between the Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. While he initially made his way for the 49ers goal post, he pivoted at the last moment and ate from the Chiefs’ post first, making his statement on who he believes will win the big game.

Soon after picking the Chiefs to win, Vulcan went to the 49ers post and pushed it over, sending a clear message for his prediction.

Should Vulcan’s prediction come true, the Kansas City Chiefs would join an elite list of back-to-back Super Bowl winners. The Patriots were the last team to pull off the feat, winning it all in 2003 and 2004. Other teams that have made back-to-back wins include the Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos and the Chiefs’ opponent, the 49ers.

Vulcan’s pick strikes a little competition among Utah’s animal life. Earlier this week Loveland Living Planet Aquarium’s resident Komodo dragon picked the 49ers to come out on top this weekend at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Vulcan made his prediction by using “enrichment goalposts” set up by Utah’s Hogle Zoo’s “referee” animal care team. The referees measured the field to place the goalposts an equal distance from where Vulcan entered the pen and placed the same food at each goalpost for impartiality. Vulcan made his pick by selecting which goalpost to eat at first.

The goalposts themselves give Vulcan an opportunity to stimulate natural behaviors by offering a new interactive toy to play with and explore.

The San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs will play in Super Bowl LVII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 4:30 p.m.
