WATCH: Tornado tears through Sterling County

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — A tornado touched down in Sterling County during the evening hours of Wednesday, May 22, and one sheriff was able to capture the twister on film.

The Sterling County Sheriff’s Office began publishing footage of the tornado at 6:12 p.m. to its Facebook profile. Posts made by the sheriff’s office stated that the twister touched down at the Sterling-Tom Green County line.

Sheriff Russell Irby weathered the storm to capture recordings of the tornado. Filmed from State Highway 163, the videos show a monolith of gray towering over the countryside.

The National Weather Service of Abilene and San Angelo is awaiting local damage reports to classify the tornado’s EF rating. According to NWS warning coordination meteorologist Mike Castillo, the tornado touched down in a remote section of the county, likely isolating structural damage to rural ranches.
