Watch: Tornado tears through neighbourhood in Pennsylvania

A tornado that ripped through Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has left multiple homes severely damaged and a church without a steeple.

The twister, rated an EF-2 with wind speeds of 118 miles per hour, shredded roofs and shattered windows as it tore through western Pennsylvania on Saturday.

The tornado tore part of the roof off of a church while around 100 people were inside attending a service. The steeple from the church was found 15 metres away in a parking lot, having crushed several cars.

The congregation at Crossroad Ministries church was interrupted after the lights began to flicker and the noise of the approaching tornado could be heard over a hymn.

The tornado was one of several that swept through the area during severe storms that battered the state.

No injuries have been reported and the National Weather Service said it would be sending a crew to assess the damage, timing and intensity of the tornado.
