Watch: Tiger Woods wraps club around tree, makes par

Tiger Woods is playing the Valspar Championship for the first time, so you can forgive him for being a little unfamiliar with the course. Even so, he entered the course’s “Snake Pit,” the vicious three-hole closing stretch, playing some decent golf, only three strokes off the lead. It didn’t take long for the Snake Pit to bite.

Woods put his tee shot on the par-4 16th into the trees at the left of the course, and found himself with an ugly lie. He slapped a shot out of the trees, clearing water in front of the green and wrapping his club around the tree:

It was an ugly scene, and the fact that Woods approached his ball shaking his hand was enough to cause some concern. This was a guy, after all, who injured himself hitting a tree root at Augusta three years ago. But Woods managed to chip close to the pin and par the hole, an unlikely result given his hideous tee shot.

Woods finished the round at one-under, three strokes off the lead, and didn’t seem to be showing any ill effects from the shot.
