Watch the Trailer for Mel Gibson's WWII Drama 'Hacksaw Ridge'

The unofficial Mel Gibson Hollywood blacklist — initiated by his various meltdowns and controversies — has apparently ended, since this November, he’ll debut his first directorial effort since 2006’s Apocalypto. And as illustrated by its first trailer, the movie will boast a collection of Hollywood heavyweights.

In Hacksaw Ridge, Andrew Garfield stars as real-life US Army medic Desmond T. Doss, a Seventh-Day Adventist who served during World War II despite the fact he refused to bear arms. Even though he was guided by that strict religious conviction, Doss’ bravery in the face of immense danger was highlighted at the Battle of Okinawa, during which he saved the lives of dozens of American soldiers and, for his valor, earned the Medal of Honor. Co-starring Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington, Hugo Weaving, and Teresa Palmer, it’s a tale meant to stir courage-of-your-convictions uplift, and one that Gibson — who, tellingly, isn’t named in the trailer — seems to have dramatized in the most melodramatic way possible.

Hacksaw Ridge looks like the sort of awards bait fit for the fall, though it remains to be soon how its reception will be affected by its helmer’s still-controversial reputation. You can check out the film’s first trailer above; it storms into theaters on Nov. 4.
