TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — An incredible rescue was caught on police bodycam video when an 81-year-old man was trapped inside his smoke-filled home.

The Tampa Police Department responded to a home located in the 3000 block of East Chipco Street last Saturday afternoon regarding smoke emitting from the residence.

Police said the man was unable to evacuate and that burglar bars were on the doors and windows of his home.

Officer Travis Wilson used specialized breaching tools, a halogen and ram, to force his way into the front door to get the man trapped inside.

The man was found “lying incapacitated” on the kitchen floor, where officers quickly grabbed him and got him safely outside.

In the video, the man is heard telling officers that the stove was still on and that it needed to be shut off.

Tampa Fire Rescue later arrived at the home and extinguished the flames, which they confirmed originated from the stove.

“The swift and decisive actions of these officers are truly commendable,” Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said. “Their bravery and commitment to public safety are shining examples of the dedicated service of every member of the Tampa Police Department.”

The man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. He has since been released.
