WATCH: Surveillance video, 911 audio shed light on how Sarasota shootout unfolded

SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — It was a seemingly normal Saturday at Tallywood Centre Plaza in Sarasota — until gunfire erupted.

“Two people shot,” a 911 caller frantically shouted. “Two people shot.”

“Two people shot,” she repeated for a third time.

In a blink of an eye, deputies said five people were shot.

“We need an ambulance right here, right now,” another 911 caller screamed.

“Where are you at?” the operated asked. “What’s the location?”

“Two people, two people fatally shot right now,” the caller panicked. “We need them right now.”

Eyewitnesses were frantic, because at a time when deputies were just minutes away, seconds mattered.

“The paramedics are already on the way and the police are on their way,” a 911 operator explained. “Are you with any of the patients?”

“Yes, I’m with two of them right now,” a 911 caller answered with urgency. “They’re bleeding out in front of me.”

Deputies said 24-year-old Tommie Battie died at the scene.

His brother, Brian Battie and three others were also shot and wounded. Brian Battie is a running back at Auburn and previously played at USF.

“I’m just right here with the victims,” another 911 caller franticly said. “I don’t know if they’re breathing or not.”

“There’s just blood everywhere.”

The hunt was immediately on for the shooter, as 911 operators tried to get answers.

“Is the shooter still there?” a operator asked.

“No I don’t see him,” a 911 caller said. “He’s gone.”

Wednesday, deputies arrested 28-year-old Darryl Brookins.

In Brookins’ probable cause affidavit, deputies said video they obtained shows Brookins pulling out a gun and shooting at Tommie Battie and Brian Battie early Saturday morning.

The affidavit says the brothers both returned gunfire before falling to the ground.

“I don’t even know where the bullets came from,” a 911 caller said. “I was trying to run away.”

“They just ricochet off something,” she said.

Brookins is now charged with murder, attempted murder, and a felon in possession of a firearm.
