Grammy-nominated rapper 2 Chainz is moving into the Mothership. He recently picked up a $2.45 million Mediterranean-style mansion in the Hollywood Hills once owned by rock guitarist Steve Vai. Vai called the home, which features a 1,400-square-foot recording studio, Mothership Studio.

The three-bedroom, 4.5 bath home is located off a windy road near Beachwood Canyon, with panoramic canyon and city views from multiple decks and balconies. The home was built in 1986 and was completely renovated last year around an open floor plan.

The home’s focal point is its kitchen and living room, which feature large, folding glass doors opening up to a large, raised patio. The master suite features a fireplace, dual closets, and limestone master bathroom with soaking tub.

The second floor of the four-story mansion is home to the recording studio, which has a separate entrance, live room, mic room, control room, separate kitchen, full bathroom, and lounge area. There’s a four-car garage at street level.

Vai bought the home in 1987, at the age of 27, for $330,000. At the time, he had put out his first studio album, was playing with David Lee Roth and Frank Zappa, and had just appeared in the film “Crossroads,” as the Devil’s guitarist. He’s since won three Grammy Awards and been nominated for 15 others.

Later, Vai bought a second home and began renting out Mothership Studio to dozens of musicians, notably Ozzy Osbourne, Eddie Van Halen, Slash, and the rock band Sugar Ray. He sold the house in 2015 for $1.5 million.

After a yearlong, top-to-bottom renovation, the new owner listed the house in September for $2.5 million. It wasn’t on the market for long: 2 Chainz snapped up the house two days later for $2.45 million, public records show.

2 Chainz, 39, released his third studio album earlier this year, “ColleGrove.” His debut album, “Based on a T.R.U. Story,” peaked at #1 in the United States and was certified Platinum. He’s a prolific rhymer, appearing this year alone as a featured artist on tracks with Jeezy, Future, Chance the Rapper, and Lil Wayne.
