Watch Prince William and Kate surprise radio host and joke about 'dad dancing'

BBC Radio 1 listeners (and one lucky DJ) got a huge surprise on Friday when Prince William and Kate Middleton stopped by the studio for a chat. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the radio station with the intention of wishing DJ Adele Roberts the best of luck in Sunday’s London Marathon. DJ Adele, who is running for the royal couple’s Heads Together campaign, was shocked when William and Kate walked in, saying: “This is surreal. It feels like I’m asleep.” As the radio conversation began to flow the pair had a blast, joking around and even trying their hand at hosting duties.

In a particularly amusing moment, the 34-year-old prince reminisced with the show’s host DJ Scott Mills about a recent trip. William referenced the now-infamous “dad dancing” video, which took place during a guys-only ski excursion to Verbier, Switzerland last March. When Scott asked the couple if they ever go to concerts or gigs, William said that it’s a bit tricky to: "You know I've got in enough trouble with my dancing recently, so it's best to keep away from that." The couple did mention that the last concert they went to was Coldplay.

The couple’s Radio 1 stint was on April 21, which happened to be Queen Elizabeth’s 91st birthday. DJ Scott was baffled by what someone could gift the Queen, asking William if it’s a difficult process. “It’s quite hard to know what to get the Queen for her birthday,” William admitted. “We’ve tried making things… now that the great-grandchildren are around, you see, they can make stuff… Doesn’t matter what it looks like – that just goes down really well. We stick to those sorts of presents.” William shared a laugh with his 35-year-old wife going on to say that their son Prince George generally makes them: “George does. He’s very good at arts and crafts.”

William and Kate later showed off some serious DJ skills. “It’s Friday! 21st of April, and this is a very special official chart,” William said, putting on his best radio voice. Kate, who sat beside her husband in the booth, couldn’t help but laugh as she listened to him play around. Then she took a turn on the mic, announcing the singles chart. The Duchess introduced Ed Sheeran’s number one song “Shape of You.”

During the interview, DJ Scott inquired about what the royal couple likes to watch on TV. William was quick to answer, saying: "Homeland, we're big fans of that, and Game Of Thrones." Of course, being parents of two children, William and Kate spend a lot of their TV time watching children’s shows. The prince spoke candidly to Scott about those programs: "Some of them are really good, but you have to pretend you're really interested because George gets very upset if you're not showing due diligence to the characters." The Prince said that the animated series Fireman Sam is his son’s favorite to watch.

William and Kate have been out and about discussing their Heads Together Campaign. On Thursday, they joined Heart FM presenter Emma Bunton at the opening of the Global Academy for a discussion on the stigma surrounding mental health. Kate revealed why it is so important to talk about it with people, saying: "It is lonely at times and you can feel quite isolated, but actually there are so many other mothers who are going through exactly the same thing that you are going through."

This Sunday the Duke and Duchess are set to attend the Virgin Money London Marathon to support the Heads Together campaign and cheer on those running for the mental health organization. The charity has been named this year’s “charity of the year” for the marathon. Speaking recently in BBC One documentary Mind Over Marathon, William revealed that he still feels shock over the death of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales nearly 20 years ago. He said: "I still have shock within me - people say it can't last that long but it does. The shock is the biggest thing [which] I still feel 20 years later, about my mother. You never get over it. It's such an unbelievably big moment in your life that it never leaves you. You just learn to deal with it."
