WATCH: Plane catches fire at Hornell Airport

UPDATE (4/26): The Hornell Fire Department has provided an update on the plane fire this afternoon at the Hornell Airport.

According to the Hornell FD, the pilot was taxing for take-off at the airport when they noticed smoke in the cockpit. They evacuated the plane and it burst into flames shortly afterward.


HORNELL, N.Y. (WETM) – A plane caught on fire at the Hornell Airport this afternoon, according to a video provided by PEISH News, as well as a Facebook post on its page.

The fire took place around 1 p.m. on Friday, April 26, at the North end of the airport.

PEISH News and Videos states that the plane looked as if it was about to take off when it burst into flames before it could take off.

Public invited to meeting on proposed Hornell roadwork

The City of Hornell Fire Department, Hornell Police Department and Arkport Fire Department all arrived at the scene quickly to tend to the fire.

In the video, the plane can be seen with heavy flames and billowing smoke. Crews are seen hosing down the plane and extinguishing the flames, where it is revealed that the plane sustained heavy front-end damage with the exterior missing to the front after the flames are put out. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

Information on the fire is limited at this time, but 18 News will update the story if more information becomes available.
