Watch: Parent arrested after brawl at 4th grade basketball game

KENT, Ohio (WJW) – It was supposed to be a fun game between two youth basketball teams last week, but it ended in a violent confrontation when a parent took his passion for his child’s game too far.

The chaos on the courts unfolded on March 2 at the Kent State Recreation and Wellness Center.

Investigators say the emotions of a parent boiled over during the fourth grade basketball game, leading to a fight in full view of the nine and 10-year-old players and their stunned families.

A rec center employee called 911 and told the dispatcher, “there is a fight on the courts and we need people here. There are about four fighting on the court.”

Kent State police say the overzealous fan who instigated the violence is identified as 37-year-old Daniel Dunson Jr. of Mogadore.

A youth basketball league had rented the rec center for the game and witnesses say when the opposing coach approached the referee about a disputed call, Dunson allegedly came up from behind and punched the coach in the head.

Investigators say other people in attendance then got involved in the melee and Dunson is accused of fighting with them as well. He was arrested on charges of assault, disorderly conduct and aggravated menacing.

Kent State Police issued a statement that reads:

“Our priority is the safety of our students, faculty and staff as well as visitors to Kent State. Adults in attendance at a child’s sporting event should consider the impact on the safety of the children participating in an enjoyable game of basketball.”

During his arraignment, the Dunson pleaded not guilty to the assault charge. He was set free after posting bond.
