Watch: Officer Derbin honored at vigil outside Euclid Police Department

EUCLID, Ohio (WJW) – Over a hundred people gathered Tuesday night outside the Euclid Police Department for a candlelight vigil in honor of fallen Euclid police officer Jacob Derbin.

Patty Carter and Kimberley Herman organized the vigil.

“I was in the citizens academy, class 38, so I have a relationship with some of the police officers and I just felt like we needed to do something,” said Carter.

The community stood together in a show of support for Officer Derbin, his family and the entire Euclid Police Department.

“The community is also grieving with the police department, we are grieving as a whole,” said Carter.

“Our police officers work really, really hard. They put their lives in danger,” said Herman.

The 23-year-old was responding to a disturbance at a home on Saturday night when he was killed in an ambush. He was on the force for less than a year.

Officer Derbin comes from a family of first responders. He became a police officer like his father, who is currently an officer with the department.

“The last thing I wanted to do was come out here tonight. It’s been the longest week of my life. I can’t even compare that to how Officer Trusso, Jacob’s father, is going through.” Lt. Joel Barron.

It’s a difficult time for his fellow police officers.

“I’m a father and I cant imagine going down that dark road,” said Barron.

Their bravery and dedication were acknowledged by a community that’s hurting right now.

“Their job is not easy. We need to respect them and we need to respect the law,” Carter said.
