Watch the new French president go into a swearing rage when his soccer team loses

On Sunday, Emmanuel Macron, the 39-year-old out-of-nowhere wonderboy of French politics, defeated right-wing opponent Marine Le Pen in the runoff for the French presidency.

But on Monday, he may have gained his most popularity yet when a video emerged from a national broadcaster shadowing him. In it, he reacts to his favorite soccer team, Olympique de Marseille, losing to AS Monaco.

The video was presumably shot March 1, the last time these teams met and Monaco advanced to the quarterfinals of the Coupe de France by winning 4-3 in extra time.

Since this is a family website, we’ll soften the dialogue.

Macron, off-camera, looking at his phone: “Oh, [feces]. Second time. [Prostitute.]”

Macron’s wife: “What’s the matter?”

Macron: “Monaco beat OM again. In Marseille.”

Macron’s wife: “Who cares?”

Then Brigitte Macron, who is 24 years older than the new president and met him when she was his high school teacher and he was just 15 (but that’s a different story for another day), asks about something she gave him that morning and everybody has been looking for. It was in his coat pocket all along. They have a chuckle.

But back to the important stuff. Macron is from Amiens, up in the north. But he’s evidently a fan of OM, which is way down on the Mediterranean coast in the south. That’s not unusual, as OM has a national following. And seeing as OM’s heyday came in the late 1980s and early ’90s, when Macron would have been a young teen and coming of age as a soccer fan, it makes sense.

Besides, Monaco, the nearby principality really is a loathsome rival for OM. The rich neighbors are the opposites of the working-class OM in almost every way.

We don’t know what you’re going to do as president, Mr. Macron. But we approve of your unabashed fandom. And don’t let your “old lady” (sorry) tell you nobody cares. Your priorities are in the right place.
