WATCH: Mother Hippo mother enjoys a swim with daughter

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — After a months-long renovation, a mother and daughter hippo duo at the San Diego Zoo are now able to enjoy their newly updated habitat.

A zoo representative told FOX 5 that the aquatic ecosystem habitat boasts 110 feet of crystal-clear glass for underwater viewing and features several new enhancements.

For instance, there is now a deck for behind-the-scenes guest opportunities, interactive experiences, storytelling elements, and a “resting rock” for the mammals.

The renovated “Hippo Trail habitat” also features a water filtration system that’s capable of filtering the entire pool — up to 210,000 gallons of water — in just one hour, the zoo explained.

This week, 39-year-old Funani and her 4-year-old daughter, Amahle, could be seen enjoying a swim together in the aquatic space. The hippo duo walked along the pool bed, later surfacing together for some fresh air.
