WATCH: Grandma becomes first person to swim from Golden Gate Bridge to Farallon Islands

A 55-year-old grandmother from Pacifica, California, is waiting to officially become the first person to swim from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Farallon Islands, with her May 11 feat pending verification with the Marathon Swimmers Federation. Footage released by the federation shows Amy Appelhans Gubser entering the water under the Golden Gate Bridge early on May 11. Her 29.6-mile swim ended off the coast of Southeast Farallon Island at 8:31 pm, 17 hours, three minutes, and 11 seconds after she set off. Local media said Gubser was the sixth person to swim the stretch, and the first to swim it outbound from San Francisco. Gubser told SF Gate: "It`s one of those challenges that I just felt and knew, in my heart and my soul, that I could do it. It`s really odd to say that, but I just felt confident and was surrounded by a lot of people that helped me prepare for this." Credit: Marathon Swimmers Federation via Storyful
