There are a few things in football that continue to boggle the mind: why some coaches refuse to go for it on fourth down past midfield, corner fades to the end zone and, of course, penalties on celebrations.

Still nothing comes close to the absurdity of hitting an opponent’s helmet with your hand.

The latest example of this comes by way of Florida defensive back Duke Dawson.

There is just no way LSU wideout Russell Gage was hurt by that slap. Just as there’s no way Dawson didn’t come away from that rubbing his hand.

This isn’t to condone any fighting during games, but come on. Use your head. The hand is not tougher than a piece of equipment designed to protect you from hits.

Both players received offsetting penalties for the altercation.
