Watch: Firefighters’ tribute to slain Euclid officer

CLEVELAND (WJW) — Cleveland and Euclid firefighters showed their support for the family of Jacob Derbin, a Euclid police officer killed in the line of duty on Saturday.

A 5-mile memorial walk stepped off at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Upper Edgewater Park, proceeding to the Cleveland Firefighters Memorial on Lakeside Avenue.

The walk ended just after 3 p.m. with a tribute to Derbin at the memorial, which you can watch in the player above.

The 23-year-old Derbin was responding to a disturbance at a home on Saturday night when he was killed in an ambush.

“When we lost firefighter Johnny Tetrick, our brothers and sisters from Euclid showed up with overwhelming support,” reads a Monday Facebook post. ” … We want the Derbin family and the entire Euclid community to know we are here for you.”

Derbin served in the Army National Guard, which included a tour in the Middle East. He became a Euclid police officer just nine months before he was killed. His father also serves on the city police force.

“My Jakey was an incredible, special and unique young man. He protected his family, his country, and his community. He is my hero. He had his whole life ahead of him. We were all looking forward to watching him marry his soul mate in July. His life was a fairytale. My baby had a heart of pure gold,” his mother told the FOX 8 I-Team.

Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered flags in the state to fly at half-staff until sunset on the day of Derbin’s funeral, which is set for Saturday.
