WATCH: Fallen heroes honored at Pikes Peak Region Peace Officers Memorial service

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A service to honor the fallen men and women of law enforcement who have died in the line of duty was held on Friday morning, May 17 at the Pikes Peak Region Peace Officers Memorial.

Law enforcement agencies across Colorado along with family members and loved ones of the fallen attended the service, which began at 10 a.m. in Memorial Park.

36 names of fallen peace officers in the Pikes Peak Region since 1985 were read aloud during the ceremony, including those of fallen Fountain Police Department K9 Officer Julian Becerra and fallen Colorado Department of Corrections Parole Officer Christine Guerin Sandoval, who both lost their lives in the line of duty in 2023.

Monday, May 13 marked the start of National Police Week, which began in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week on which May 15 falls, as National Police Week.
