Watch: Elk rescued after falling through ice

DENVER (KDVR) — Wildlife officers and firefighters were called last Friday on reports of a young elk that had fallen through the ice on a pond in Golden.

The Jefferson County Animal Control received a call saying a young elk had fallen through the ice on a pond near the 22600 block of Anasazi Way, according to a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office post on X.

CPW to the rescue: Elk tangles antlers in wire

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers and Foothills firefighters arrived at the pond and found the elk swimming with its head just above the water. A video of the elk was posted on X and can be viewed in the video player above.

Crews used ropes to pull the elk out of the water.

Because the elk was exhausted and needed time to recover, crews positioned the elk on its chest.

According to the tweet, it took about an hour for the elk to regain its strength. Crews waited with the elk while it worked to stand up and leave.

This is one of many interactions CPW has had with elk in the past year. CPW often responds to elk calls during mating season when elks rub their antlers against trees to impress females and show their dominance.

This past summer, CPW found one elk with wires caught in his antlers. Another elk was caught on camera with its antlers stuck in a child’s swing.
