WATCH: CPD Officer saves 89-year-old woman from burning home in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) – The Columbus Police Department release body camera footage of a CPD Officer saving an elderly woman from a burning home.

CPD says on May 10, around 12:44 a.m. Officer Michale Coley was on patrol near Veterans Parkway and Hancock Road when he started smelling smoke. Although, at the time, there were no reports of a fire, Coley searched the area until he found a home on Waterhill Road engulfed in flames.

After discovering the fire, Coley immediately knocked on the door and the windows of the home to alert the resident(s) inside. Neighbors told Coley that there was only one person in the house, who police identified as an 89-year-old woman.

CPD said as the fire continued to grow and with no firefighters around at the moment, Coley entered the smoke-filled residence, found the woman sleeping in her bedroom, and escorted her out of the house to safety.

After Columbus Fire and EMS arrived on the scene, Coley along with others assisted firefighters with pulling hoses from the trucks to help put the fire out.
