Watch: College baseball team nearly throws away its season with glorious comedy of errors

Sometimes, in baseball, everything goes your way. Other times, this happens:

With a 3-1 lead in the 8th inning against Georgia, Ole Miss put on a comedy of errors for our viewing pleasure Thursday afternoon in Alabama. It all began when pitcher Parker Caracci threw home on a comebacker off the bat of Georgia’s Aaron Shunk, only to sail the ball over his catcher’s head.

But the first error, albeit a mental one, came before that: it appears Caracci mistakenly thought the bases were loaded. In fact, there were only runners on second and third, meaning first base was open and no one had to come home. More importantly, there were two outs, so simply throwing to first would have ended the inning regardless of who was on base.

Thanks to the misplay, both the runners on second and third scored, tying the game at three runs apiece. For some reason, however, third baseman Ryan Olenek also ran to back up the catcher’s throw home, allowing Shunk to make it all the way to third on the play.

Worst play … ever?

Lucky for SEC Tournament No. 2-seed Ole Miss, the game went to 10 innings, and it was eventually able to walk off for the 5-4 win over No. 3-seed Georgia.
