WATCH: Bear, aka ‘box-head dog,’ has found his forever home — and has a new job

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Bear, known throughout the Gulf Coast as the dog with a box on his head, is now safe and without a box on his head.

You probably already knew that, but here’s the latest development with this beloved Cane Corso: now, he’s the new Ambassador for the City of Mobile Animal Services, and he has found a forever home!

Bear gets a new last name

Mobile Animal Services Director Robert Bryant and animal advocate Martin Miller brought Bear into the WKRG News 5 studio Thursday afternoon to sit down on the Red Couch with Cherish Lombard.

During that interview, News 5 viewers learned, “Bear has a new last name,” Lombard said. “You’re taking him home!”

“He has my last name now, yeah; his [last] name is Miller,” Martin Miller said. “Robert and I, we talked at lengths about what we wanted to do with Bear.”

“Yeah, so trying to find a good home for a dog that’s garnered this much publicity is always a big deal,” Bryant said. “There’s gonna be a ton of people that wanna take him home.

“And in this particular case, we got to thinking about it, and really, who better than one of the team members that spent so much time trying to get him off the streets in the first place?

A new home for Bear: testing the waters

Of course, it wasn’t just a done deal; there’s a formal process.

“Obviously, we have a strict application policy, and Robert made sure that we’d done a behavior test with my dogs, and everything is fine there,” Miller said. “My dog is big enough for a horse as well.”

Miller’s dogs passed the test with flying colors, we learned. So did Bear.

“They’ve done fantastic,” Miller said. “My smaller dog was terrified. She’d never seen a dog this size before. But Bear’s, his behavior, his temperament is just unbelievable, you know, for a big dog. He just chills out. He loves the other dogs in the house.”

‘He’ll never be alone again’

Bear was a loner for so long; now, he has a home, and that’s just something he’ll have to get used to.

“He was alone for so long, and he’ll never be alone again, and so he’ll spend his days at the city animal shelter, and then he’ll go home with you at night,” Bryant said to Miller.

“Yep,” Miller said.

The public can meet Bear at the city’s animal shelter.
