Watch: Baltimore bridge explodes in controlled demolition

Part of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has been destroyed in a controlled explosion.

Monday’s demolition broke apart chunks of the bridge, clearing the way for a potential full return of shipping through the area by the end of the month.

On March 26 a cargo ship, the Dali, lost power and veered off course, colliding with the bridge and killing six construction workers.

The cargo ship has been entangled in the fallen structure since the collision, which sent around 4,000 tonnes of debris into the Patapsco river.

Officials said that precision cuts were made during the detonation, hoping to free the Dali which will return to port with the 21 crew members still on board who have been tasked with maintaining the vessel.

Authorities said that the demolition went according to plan and that they hope to have the ship moved within the next two days.
