Watch our Armed Forces Day tribute to the heroes in uniform

“Thank you for your service” has become the go-to expression of gratitude for many Americans encountering members of the U.S. military since the Global War on Terrorism began post-9/11.

And there’s no better time to say it loud and proud than Armed Forces Day, which is celebrated annually on the third Saturday in May.

Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to show appreciation to those currently serving in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. The tradition, which is part of Armed Forces Week, dates back to 1949 when the separate branches of the military were first united under one government department – the Department of Defense. The DoD is the largest employer in the country, with more than three million active, reserve, and civilian personnel in its ranks.

Though not a federal holiday, Armed Forces Day is still celebrated from sea to shining sea and beyond, with military parades, flag-waving, patriotic clothing, donations to military organizations, and more, all designed as a thank-you to those who serve.
