Washington County man sentenced to 25 years for sex crimes with a child

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for sex crimes with a minor, officials said.

According to the Washington County District Attorney’s Office, Brett Church Michie, 47, was sentenced Friday on sex abuse and sodomy charges.

It was first reported by a social media company in 2023 that Michie was downloading and sharing child sex abuse material over the internet the DA’s office said.

Beaverton police, after being contacted by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Program, contacted Mitchie who they said admitted to trading the explicit images online.

After consenting to a search of his phone, officials said they found “hundreds of disturbing images involving the abuse of children,” which included pictures of Mitchie sexually abusing a child, which had been shared online.

Mitchie was arrested, and authorities said that he made a failed attempt to kill himself while in custody.

Under Jessica’s Law, which requires a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years to anyone convicted of first-degree sex crimes involving a child under 12, Mitchie was sentenced to 300 months in jail for three counts of first-degree sexual abuse, first-degree sodomy and using a child in display of sexually explicit conduct.
