'If You Wanted to Stay in Hillary's Good Graces, You Answer the Call from Huma'
The Clintons did not to endorse anyone in the New York City mayoral race, but behind the scenes and indirectly, The Washington Post reports, the Clinton machine has been helping Anthony Weiner. His wife and former Hillary Clinton aide, Huma Abedin, "has continued to aggressively work Clinton’s circle — to the annoyance of some" to get campaign donations and support for her husband, Karen Tumulty and Jason Horowitz write. But even if it was annoying, and without making it clear whether the Clintons were okay with it, the donors still contributed, because Hillary Clinton is expected to run for president in 2016 with Abedin at her side, and that's just what donors do, apparentlt. The Post reports:
"People like Huma, but they saw her trading on the Hillary card and resented it. But that didn’t mean they didn’t show up" for Weiner, said a Clinton intimate, one of several who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "The chatter was, if you wanted to stay in Hillary’s good graces, you answer the call from Huma."
Weiner said of Bill and Hillary in April, "their whole family has been remarkably supportive of ours." But that hint at their backing was knocked down anonymously in the New York Post in May, when an anonymous Democratic source said, "The Clintons wish Weiner would just disappear." Things can get pretty murky in the world of political fundraising, and so it's not clear whether Abedin had asked her once (and one assumes future) boss about invoking her Clinton ties on behalf of her disgraced husband. But, then again, if Abedin, well versed in diplomacy, wants to stay in Clinton's good graces, she wouldn't invoke her boss without knowing it was okay beforehand. Whatever the situation, whether by the Clintons' intention or because Abedin is working their circle on her own, Weiner's comment now seems closer to the truth.
