Ohio craft breweries are jumping into eclipse mania, releasing special beers to celebrate the once-in-a-lifetime event.

But one brewery didn't need to come up with a new beer.

Maumee Bay Brewing Co. in Toledo has been offering Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout since 2009. The beer, which is available year-round and statewide on draft and in cans, is a hefty 9.1% alcohol and features roasted espresso beans from The Flying Rhino, oats and lactose.

It shouldn't come as a shock that Maumee Bay is seeing an increase in demand for Total Eclipse as the solar eclipse approaches. The eclipse will roll through Ohio on April 8, with Toledo being in the path of totality.

"We've sold double (so far) what we normally do," said Michael Martin, brewery sales manager. "People are getting excited for it."

Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout also will be featured at eclipse celebrations around Toledo. Maumee Bay is hosting a special beer pairing dinner the night before the eclipse showcasing four additional Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout variations. There are chocolate strawberry, stone fruit and cherry, chocolate peanut butter, and bourbon barrel-aged versions available on draft.

If you are looking to toast the eclipse with an Ohio-made brew, here are some others. This is not a comprehensive list:

Twin Oast Brewing in Catawba Island is hosting a party and releasing a coffee blonde ale called Bean There, Seen That.

"The reason we chose this style was to play on the concept of something that was simultaneously dark and light, as the eclipse will be," Twin Oast co-founder Cory Smith said. "We're planning on doing a limited canning run of this, and do the rest on draft."

Bean There, Seen That will be available in the taproom only to start, and then it will be distributed starting April 9.

"We expect a lot of people coming to our event Totality Over Twin Oast, so we want to make sure they all have a chance to pick up the beer on site," Smith said. "We always are trying to find reasons to celebrate beer, so when we heard about being in the line of totality, we knew we had to do a beer release with the event."

Phoenix Brewing Co. in Mansfield is releasing two eclipse beers.

And Then We Went Blind is a chocolate porter, with 5.8% alcohol by volume. It will be released at 3 p.m. Tuesday on draft and in to-go cans. Scott Skiver, a member of the Toledo Bavarian Sports Club, won an online auction through the Ohio Craft Brewers Association to help brew the beer. He wasn't able to make the brew day but he, along with several of his friends from the club, helped pick the name and style for the special release.

The second eclipse beer was brewed by women from Phoenix and the local community. The Total Eclipse of the Tart celebrates International Women's Day and International Women's Collaboration Brew Day, the women who work in the industry and those who support craft beer. The beer was brewed March 9.

“This batch will be really special because it’s also releasing with the eclipse," said Carmone Macfarlane, creative and marketing head for Phoenix. "The name was suggested by Alyssa Nichols, wife to brewer Ryan Nichols at the Phoenix and it was the inspiration for the recipe. Blueberry seemed like the obvious choice for fruit, and we really haven’t had a chance to brew with it often. With this being a smaller batch, it was a great opportunity to also play.”

Hoppin' Frog Brewery in Akron is releasing the amphibian-themed Toadal Eclipse, an imperial stout. The label for the 16-ounce can is a nod to one of the bestselling albums of all time.

"It's a celebration of one of my all-time favorite vinyls — Dark Side Of The Moon," owner and brewmaster Fred Karm said in an email. "When I was around 14 years old, I wore out my dad's copy and had to buy him another one. Without a job at that age, that was difficult, and memorable."

The brewery also is hosting a ticketed eclipse party from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Tasting Room, where Karm will be playing the Pink Floyd classic.

"And I am going time it perfectly, to have the song 'Time' start right when totality begins," he said. "Should be bad-ass! They did that on Spotify in 2017 when I was in Nashville for the solar eclipse, and it was mind-blowing."

Market Garden Brewery and Heinen's

Market Garden Brewery in Cleveland and the regional Heinen's grocery chain teamed up to produce Totality, a West Coast-style India pale ale.

After the 2017 eclipse, “I marked my calendar,” Market Garden co-founder Sam McNulty told the Associated Press.

Last year, McNulty’s team brewed a hazy IPA called “The Totality” to help drum up interest in the eclipse. The on-tap debut was a success, and the brewery was Heinen’s to partner for a canned collaboration.

In the coming weeks, “thousands and thousands” of cans are set to hit store shelves, McNulty said — adding they decided to go big because of how rare the event is. Cleveland won’t be in the path of totality again for a long time — not until 2444.

“I don’t want to have to wait 420 years to brew the next batch of cans,” he joked with the Associated Press. “So we made a very large one this time.”
