So You Want To Be an Astronaut?

NASA posted a new listing on the federal government's jobs website on Tuesday, in search of a few men or women who might be looking to join their team of outer space explorers. Must be willing to relocate to the International Space Station.

The post is both informative and entertaining, as it clearly spells out the requirements and benefits of the astronaut service, while still reading like a typical Monster.com opening for an freelance accountant.

Some the necessary qualifications include a bachelor's degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics; 20/20 vision; good blood pressure; and the ability to fit into a space suit. The agency expects to add 9-15 full-time positions in Houston, Texas, but is limited to U.S. citizens who can pass background checks, drug tests, and a pretty ridiculous physical.

Duties include robot operation, conducting experiments, spaceship maintenance, extravehicular activities (i.e., space walks); and "long-duration missions" aboard the ISS. The training program last two to three years — not counting the year-long interview process — but benefits are good and you get to spend a lot of time in Russia.

"Creativity. Ambition. Teamwork. A sense of daring. And a probing mind. That's what it takes to join NASA, one of the best places to work in the Federal Government."

Starting salary is between $64,724 and $141,715 per year. Also: "Frequent travel may be required." I'll say.
