Walmart chia seeds recalled nationwide for salmonella risk, FDA says

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A company has issued a voluntary recall for Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds sold in Walmart nationwide due to a “potential presence of Salmonella.”

Natural Sourcing International recalled 32-ounce packages of Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds with an expiration date of Oct. 30, 2026. On Monday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted the company’s recall, which was issued on Friday, May 10.

According to the company, there have not yet been any reports of salmonella infection linked to the chia seeds, however, they are issuing the recall “out of an abundance of caution.”

Those who have purchased the chia seeds should throw the product away. The company is offering a replacement bag if the customer can provide proof of purchase.

Salmonella infection can be fatal in young children, individuals with weakened immune systems and elderly people, according to the release.

For healthy individuals, it can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. While rare, salmonella can also lead to severe illnesses and arterial infections in some cases, such as aneurysms, endocarditis and arthritis.

Most healthy people will recover from the infection in a few days, however, if it lasts longer or comes with a high fever, bloody stools, or dehydration, the Mayo Clinic says to seek medical help.
