WalletHub ranks Albuquerque among nation’s most obese cities

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Obesity is an ongoing problem every state in the country struggles with. WalletHub recently looked at 100 U.S. cities and how they tackle the issue.

They looked at 19 key indicators of weight-related problems. The data WalletHub used ranged from the share of physically inactive adults to projected obesity rates by 2030 to healthy food access. Each city was given a general total score, and obesity & overweight, health consequences, and food & fitness ranks.

Albuquerque came in at No. 36 with an overall total of 75.54, an obesity and overweight rank of 16, a health consequences rank of 36, and a food and fitness rank of 52. Each dimension of the study was evaluated over 19 relevant metrics.

Albuquerque ranked among U.S.’s Top 100 ‘most caring’ cities

Those metrics were graded on a 100-point scale with a score of 100 being the “fattest.” The metrics looked at things like shares of adults with high cholesterol, obese adults, and the number of adults with low fruit/vegetable consumption.

The data WalletHub gathered is current as of February 19, 2024, from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, County Health Rankings, United States Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service, Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative, Gallup-Sharecare, Trust for America’s Health, and WalletHub’s own research.
