‘Walking Dead’ Season 7, Episode 7 Recap

Fans of Robert Kirkman’s Walking Dead comic books loved Sunday’s episode. In Season 7, episode 7 of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” — titled “Sing Me A Song” — Carl finally makes it to The Sanctuary and has a heart-racing run in with the big bad Negan. The scene is an iconic moment from Kirkman’s graphic novels.

The episode kicks off with Michonne (Danai Gurira) waking alone down a deserted road. She’s whistling a haunting song that attracts two walkers. They start following her, but Michonne ignores them continuing up the road as she whistles. Michonne eventually stops and kills the walkers with her katana. She puts her weapon and bag on the ground and then drags one of the walkers to the side of the road. We have a feeling Michonne is up to something.

Meanwhile, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Aaron (Ross Marquand) are still on their mission looking for supplies to bring back to Alexandria for Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). They spent the night in the back of a truck, and when they open the sliding door of the vehicle, Aaron spots something in the distance.

Things then switch to Carl (Chandler Riggs) and Jesus (Tom Payne) who are still hiding in the back of The Savior’s food truck. Jesus is using pancake syrup to leave a trail so they’ll be able to find their way back to Alexandria from The Sanctuary. He tells Carl that he thinks they’re close to The Saviors’ home so they should jump out of the truck and follow on foot. Carl seems scared to jump out of the truck, worried that he’s going to hurt himself. Jesus says the truck is driving slow enough that they’ll be fine. Carl tells him to jump first to show him how he’s supposed to land. Jesus does, but Carl doesn’t jump out of the truck waving to Jesus as the vehicles continues down the road.

When the truck stops inside The Sanctuary, Carl grabs a machine gun and crouches down behind one of the food crates. He hears Negan tell some of his men to start unloading the truck. A guy jumps into the back of the truck and grabs a crate full of bottles. The bottom of it breaks causing the bottles to crash to the ground. As he bends down to clean up the mess he spots Carl and Carl shoots him. Carl tells everyone to stay back and says he wants Negan.

Negan’s walks up to Carl whistling, and tells Carl that he’s “adorable.” Another Savior runs towards Carl, but Carl shoots and kills him. Dwight (Austin Amelio) tackles Carl and takes the gun from him. Daryl (Norman Reedus) is watching everything from behind a fence. Negan stops Dwight from killing Carl and offers his hand to Carl to help him up. Negan wants to show Carl around.

Back at Alexandria, Rosita (Christian Serratos ) is getting ready to leave and is bringing Eugene (Josh McDermitt) with her. Spencer (Austin Nichols) tries to stop her and tells her that they need to go find supplies for Negan, but Rosita has other plans. She and Eugene leave.

Negan takes Carl to a room where he has all his wives and pulls Sherry (Christine Evangelista) aside and asks her about an incident that happened while he was gone. Apparently, one of his other wives Amber cheated on him with a guy named Mark. Sherry tells Negan that Amber made a mistake and to take it easy on her.

Amber is sitting on the couch upset. Negan tells her that she can leave and go back to Mark and her mom if she wants to, but he won’t allow her to cheat on him. However, if Amber decides to go back with her family, Negan threatens that he will put them to work. Amber starts crying and apologizes, telling Negan that she will stay and she loves him. Negan then tells Sherry that he did take it easy on Amber and starts kissing her. Dwight walks in with Daryl as Negan is kissing his ex-wife. Daryl asks Negan why Carl is at The Sanctuary, and Negan tells him to mind his business and threatens to stab Carl in his good eye with a toothpick. When Negan, Carl, Daryl and Dwight leave, Sherry is seen crying.

Things then switch to Spencer and Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam). They left Alexandria to go looking for supplies but in the car ride Spencer starts trash-talking Rick. He tells the priest that he thinks Alexandria would be better off if Rick never returned. Gabriel tells Spencer to stop the car, and he gets out and starts walking back to Alexandria. Spencer gets out the car and runs into the woods where he sees a walker stuck in a trap high up in a tree.

Back at The Sanctuary, Negan takes Carl to his room and tells him that he wants to get to know him better. Negan tells Carl that because he killed two of his men, he can’t let that slide and tells Carl to take the bandage off his eye. Carl doesn’t want to, but Negan makes him. When Carl finally removes the bandage, Negan remarks on how gross and disgusting it looks. He asks Carl if he can touch it, and Carl doesn’t say anything but cowers down. When he sees that Carl is getting really upset, Negan apologizes.

In walks Joey (Joshua Hoover), who tells Negan that he left his barbed-wire bat Lucille outside. Negan says he never forgets Lucille and says it must have been because Carl killed two of his men. He makes Joey leave and tells Carl to sing him a song. Carl is still cowering down and tells Negan that he can’t think of any. Negan holds Lucille close to Carl’s face and tells he better think of a song to sing. Carl chooses to sing “You Are My Sunshine.” When Carl is finished singing, Negan makes him get up and they leave the room.

Carl and Negan head to what appears to be a common area. Mark is crying and tied to a chair in the center of the room. Negan makes Carl hold Lucille, and he burns Mark face with a hot iron for sleeping with Amber. Mark passes out from the pain and also went to the bathroom on himself. Negan makes Daryl clean up the mess Mark made and has a doctor tend to Mark’s face. He tells everyone that’s a reminder that rules need to be followed.

Elsewhere, Rosita wants Eugene to make her a bullet. Although he agreed to help her, he’s hesitant about doing it now because he knows there will be consequences. Rosita tells Eugene he’s a coward, and the only reason he’s survived so long is because he lied in order to have people protect him. Rosita tells Eugene that for once he needs to step up to the plate and help. He reluctantly agrees to make the bullet for her.

Back at The Sanctuary, Negan and Carl are back in Negan’s room, and Carl wants to know if he can finally put his bandage back on. Negan tells him no and Carl gets angry, asking Negan why he hasn’t killed him, Rick or Daryl yet. Negan says he’s sparing Daryl’s life because he’s going to make a good soldier, and he hasn’t killed Rick because he’s bringing him supplies. Negan says he’s not sure if he’s going to kill Carl, and Carl tells Negan that he hasn’t killed him yet because he’s not going to. Carl also tells Negan that he should jump out the window to save Carl from having to kill him.

Negan decides to take Carl for a ride and it’s revealed that Jesus is at The Sanctuary on top of the truck Carl and Negan are about to leave in. Daryl approaches the truck before it pulls off and warns Negan that he better not do anything to Carl. Negan tells Dwight that Daryl needs a time out and to put him back in his cell. As the door closes to Daryl’s cell someone slips him a handwritten note that says, “Go now.”

The next scene reveals that Michonne has been busy building a road block of dead walkers. One of The Saviors is driving by and stops to get out to see what’s going on. Michonne comes out of the woods nearby holding her katana to The Savior’s neck and tells her to hand over her knife and gun. Michonne and the captured Savior get back in the car and Michonne tells her to take her to Negan.

Meanwhile, Negan and Carl arrive at Alexandria. Olivia (Ann Mahone) tells Negan that Rick won’t be back for a while because he’s on out scavenging supplies. She tells him that the people at Alexandria are practically starving because they’re running low on food, and Negan pokes fun at Olivia’s weight, making her cry. He says he’s going to wait at Alexandria for Rick to get back and crudely tells Olivia that he wants to “screw her brains out.” She slaps him in the face, but Negan says that only turned him on more. He orders Olivia to make him and Carl some lemonade and then instructs Carl to take him on a tour of their house. Carl wants to keep Negan away from Judith, but he finds her room and picks her up. Negan is later seen sitting on the porch holding Judith as he talks about burying Rick and Carl in the garden.

When Rosita, Eugene and Spencer arrive back at Alexandria they realize Negan is already there.
