Carl Grimes' impending death on The Walking Dead has proven so controversial that fans have been signing a petition demanding that showrunner Scott Gimple be fired.

Viewers have been making their voices heard since the midseason finale aired last week and the revelation that actor Chandler Riggs had no plans to quit, and that it was reportedly Gimple's call to kill off Rick's son – deemed by fans to be one of the most important characters on the show.

Carl's death will have significant impact on the TV series going forwards, especially given that the character is still alive in the comics and has a number of key storylines.

More than 50,000 people have so far signed the Change.org petition to Walking Dead broadcaster AMC.

"Recently, Scott has decided to kill off the show's most pivotal character Carl Grimes, son of main character Rick Grimes," the petition reads. "The entire show has been a lead up to showing Carl become the leader that his father is, maybe one day taking on the mantle himself.

"Actor Chandler Riggs even considered postponing his college education so he could work on the show after Gimple promised that he would be on the show for three more years. Chandler's dad, William Riggs, said in a Facebook post that was later pulled that Gimple fired his son just two weeks before his 18th birthday.

"Gimple gave no explanation as to why Chandler was killed off other than that it was because of 'the story', and that it had nothing to do with personal issues.

"This petition is meant to bring AMC TV into the spotlight and fire The Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple for his actions and unfair treatment of actor Chandler Riggs."

Some fans have taken to coming up with theories on how Carl could potentially survive the walker bite he received. A couple are pretty crazy, mind you.

The Walking Dead returns February 25, 2018 on AMC in the US and February 26, 2018 on FOX and NOW TV in the UK.
