Police: Taunton man ignored cries for help after causing crash that killed Fall River woman

A Taunton man who police say was speeding and driving drunk when he caused a head-on crash that killed a beloved Fall River school crossing guard was arraigned Wednesday morning in Taunton District Court and ordered held on $25,000 bail.

Ricky J. Ponte, 29, allegedly drove his Mercedes sedan into a Honda CRV being driven by 67-year-old Margaret “Peggy” McGowan, after police say Ponte tried to illegally pass another vehicle while heading west on Route 44 in Taunton.

Ricky J. Ponte, 29, of Taunton, is arraigned on a charge of motor vehicle negligent homicide while under the influence of alcohol and other charges Wednesday, April 9, 2024, in Taunton District Court in connection with the crash on March 10, 2024, in Taunton that claimed the life of beloved Fall River crossing guard Margaret "Peggy" McGowan. Ponte, who was also injured in the crash, appeared in court in a wheelchair.

Ponte is charged with four criminal counts.

How much Taunton traffic officers make, what they do, who gets to bid

Since the city adopted its own TCO (traffic control officer) program in the summer of 2022, at least 30 civilians have become qualified to fill the role, according to police Sgt. Kevin Medas, who oversees the municipal program.

And although civilians have to wait their turn and defer to both active and retired police officers vying for TCO jobs, he said they nonetheless are an integral part of an important, public safety program.

Taunton's Alice Perry recently turned 100, but she says she feels like she's 60 again.

“I just can’t believe it. I honestly never thought I would live this long,” said Perry, speaking from her apartment at The Residence at Great Woods in Norton, which she only just moved into last year, after living independently in Taunton all her life.

B-P teachers say school has 'low morale' and 'high turnover.'

B-P teachers pleading for a role in the superintendent search are unhappy with the district’s current leadership and want a voice in helping make sure the district gets the kind of change it badly needs, B-P teachers union President Tasha Cordero said.

The Bristol-Plymouth school committee “exhibits disdain and animosity towards teachers, never truly believing or listening to us” and the school has “a poor climate and low morale under the current superintendent’s leadership for a decade, and have had a high turnover of staff as a result, more so than ever before,” Cordero said in an email to the Gazette on March 29.
