Walk-off hits power Fresno State softball sweep; Bulldogs’ Murf Gray hits sixth homer

The Fresno State softball team picked a good time to get hot.

The Bulldogs beat Nevada 5-1 Sunday to complete a three-game weekend sweep at Margie Wright Diamond. Fresno State won the games Friday 5-4 and Saturday 3-2, both in extra innings.

The Bulldogs (20-24, 9-7 Mountain West) solidified third place in conference while dropping Nevada and former Fresno State coach Linda Garza to 6th place. The top six teams in the nine-team Mountain West make the conference tournament on May 11-13 in San Diego.

Fresno State has a Wednesday at 6 p.m. game at home against No. 8 Stanford before returning to Mountain West action next weekend at Colorado State.

Against Nevada, Freshman catcher Kennedy Bunker and junior shortstop Alesia Denby had walk-off hits Friday and Saturday, and senior first baseman Vanessa Hernandez had a two-run single in the Bulldogs’ five-run first inning.

Baseball: Fresno State splits home series

San Jose State beat Fresno State 9-5 Sunday at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium to split a weekend Mountain West series.

Third baseman Murf Gray, the four-time Freshman of the Week, hit his sixth homerun of the season during the Bulldogs’ Saturday doubleheader sweep.

Fresno State (20-19, 11-10) is tied for third place in the Mountain West with Air Force behind San Diego State and San Jose State. The top four make the conference tournament Memorial Day Weekend.

The Bulldogs are on the road this week at San Francisco and at New Mexico.

Baseball: Buchanan product throws no-hitter

San Diego State junior left-hander TJ Fondtain (Buchanan High) pitched the Aztecs’ first no-hitter since Stephen Strasburg in 2009, beating Nevada 4-0 Friday night.

Fondtain took a perfect game into the ninth. He pitched around a lead off walk and finished with 14 strike outs.
