Walk a Mile in My Shoes coming to Eldridge Park on May 4

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – The 19th annual Walk a Mile in My Shoes event is coming to Eldridge Park on Saturday, May 4. Community members have been able to register for the event for weeks, but those interested can still sign up on the morning of at 9 a.m.

“It’s a fundraiser for suicide prevention, but it’s not important to me that we raise funds or that people even walk. The most important part is that people come out in this community to support such an important cause,” said Chemung County Commissioner of Human Services Brian Hart.

A $15 donation will get participants a t-shirt and lunch while supplies last; though no donation is required to participate. The suicide prevention fundraiser will also feature raffle prizes.

“There will be some live entertainment. Before the event starts around nine o’clock if you haven’t registered, you can come to the Whip Building which is just adjacent to the merry-go-round at Eldridge Park starting at nine. Officially, the walk starts at 11 a.m. and we’ll have people walk around the lovely lake at Eldridge and the rest of the park to start the day out,” said Hart.

Registration open for Walk a Mile in My Shoes

“We anticipate probably having 1,500 or so people. I know 1,300 have already pre-registered for the event. Our efforts as I said started 19 years ago, but for all the wrong reasons because at that point we had a contagion of suicides happening amongst teenagers and so we’ve been a leader in the state in a lot of our suicide prevention efforts since that point,” said Hart.
