Apple can generally be relied on for clever, well-produced ads, but it missed the mark with its latest, which depicts a tower of creative tools and analog items literally crushed into the form of the iPad. Apple has since apologized for the ad and canceled plans to televise it. Apple's VP of Marketing Tor Myhren told Ad Age: "We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry."
Apple has reportedly apologized for its tone-deaf “Crush!” ad that sparked a furious backlash — especially with artists. AdAge reports that Apple said the video “missed the mark” and has scrapped plans to run the cutesy-turned-cringey commercial on TV.

Here's a tidbit of startup history that may not be widely known outside of the tech firms themselves: The first versions of popular Android apps, like Twitter, were built by Google itself. In a podcast hosted by Lightspeed partner Michael Mignano, Beykpour reminisces about her role in Twitter's history. Later, Beykpour moved to work on mobile at Twitter around the time when other third-party apps were growing in popularity on other platforms, like BlackBerry and iOS.

Google DeepMind has taken the wraps off a new version of AlphaFold, their transformative machine learning model that predicts the shape and behavior of proteins. AlphaFold 3 is not only more accurate, but predicts interactions with other biomolecules, making it a far more versatile research tool — and the company is putting a limited version of the model free to use online. In recent years, computational modeling techniques like AlphaFold and RoseTTaFold have taken over from expensive, lab-based methods, accelerating the work of thousands of researchers across as many fields.

High interest rates and financial pressures make it more important than ever for finance teams to have a better handle on their cash flow, and several startups are hoping to help. Two-year-old Israeli startup Panax is one, and it just raised a $10 million Series A round of funding led by Team8, with participation from TLV Partners. SVB's collapse created tailwinds for the cash management category, which includes players such as Embat, Kyriba, Statement and Vesto.
Samsung Medison, a medical device unit of Samsung Electronics that specializes in developing diagnostic imaging devices, said on Wednesday it plans to acquire Sonio, a Paris-based startup that makes AI-powered software for ultrasound workflows, for about $92.7 million (KRW 126 billion). The French startup’s AI assistant is aimed at helping obstetricians and gynecologists with the evaluation and documentation of ultrasound exams, and it has also received regulatory clearance in the United States (FDA 510(k)) for Sonio Detect, a product that uses deep learning algorithms to improve the image quality of ultrasound scans in real time. Samsung Medison said Sonio’s software would help it bring better AI-driven imaging workflows to the market.

Meta is rolling out an expanded set of generative AI tools for advertisers, after first announcing a set of AI features last October. Now, instead of only being able to create different backgrounds for a product image, advertisers can also request full image variations, which offer AI-inspired ideas for the overall photo, including riffs that update the photo's subject or product being advertised. In one example, Meta shows how an existing ad creative showing a cup of coffee sitting outdoors next to coffee beans could be modified to present the cup, from a different angle, in front of lush greenery and coffee beans, evoking imagery reminiscent of a coffee farm.
AI is coming for audiobooks, and that is not an entirely bad thing. Audible is making it easy for authors to generate AI-narrated audiobooks, and as in many cases of AI showing up in an established industry, there's worry that the creative folks are going to get squeezed out by the robots.
Apple isn't yet ready to unveil its broader AI strategy — it's saving that for its Worldwide Developer Conference in June — but the tech giant did make sure to mention AI technologies across its device lineup at its iPad event on Tuesday. The company touted a new iPad Air as "an incredibly powerful device for AI;" its AI-powered features like visual lookup, subject lift and live text capture, among others; and, of course, its upgraded M4 chip, which features a neural engine that's "dedicated to the acceleration of AI workloads." For instance, the iPad Air's update, which now includes the M2 with a faster CPU, GPU and neural engine, was described as offering "powerful machine learning features," like visual lookup, which can identify objects in photos; an AI-powered tool that can lift out a photo's subject; and live text capture, which can copy, share, look up and translate text within the camera frame.
'It doesn't settle into fine lines,' says one fan. 'It's very lightweight, but it works.'
Robert Kahn has been a consistent presence on the Internet since its creation — obviously, since he was its co-creator. The interview was conducted on the occasion of Kahn (who goes by Bob in conversation) being awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor this week — you can watch the ceremony and speeches here. Last year the IEEE gave the medal to Vint Cerf, Kahn's partner in creating the protocols underpinning the internet and web.
