Wake County sees biggest one-day jump in COVID-19 cases

Wake County reported 90 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, its biggest one-day jump in confirmed cases since reporting began the first week of March.

Wake County now has a total of 764 cases and 15 deaths, according to its website.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, which updates cases once a day, reported 671 cases and 13 deaths in the county.

Monday’s surge came after the state reported a total of 70 cases so far at North Carolina’s main prison for women, the N.C. Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh. More than 160 inmates in the prison’s minimum-security camp were tested over the weekend, many testing positive, according to the N.C. Department of Public Safety.

The state also released detailed information Monday on outbreaks at nursing homes and other congregate-care facilities. The state defines an outbreak as two or more laboratory-confirmed cases.

All told, North Carolina had 9,142 cases, 473 current hospitalizations with 80% of hospitals reporting, and 109,920 tests completed across the state as of Monday, according to the DHHS website. The case counts don’t give a full picture of how widespread COVID-19 is, however, because not all infected patients are tested, state officials say.

DURHAM COUNTY

Durham County reported 10 new cases Monday for a total of 565 cases, and one new death for a total of 16 deaths, according to its website.

The DHHS website reported 539 cases in Durham County, down 16 cases from Sunday, and 13 deaths.

ORANGE COUNTY

Orange County reported 207 cases, down one from Sunday, and 13 deaths, the same number as Sunday.

A county’s numbers can change, including by decreasing, when a person’s residence is verified because the state reports cases in an individual’s normal county of residence, not necessarily where the person is receiving care, the county stated.

JOHNSTON COUNTY

Johnston County’s website reported a total of 139 confirmed cases of COVID-19, up four from Sunday, and 13 total deaths. The DHHS website reported 137 cases in Johnston County.
