Waikiki hotel uses 150 gallons of chocolate to make global village out of gingerbread
HONOLULU, Hawaii - A Waikiki hotel used 250 gallons of icing and 150 gallons of dark chocolate to create a miniature global village out of gingerbread.
The gingerbread village on display in the lobby of the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani features replicas of London's Tower Bridge and the Eiffel Tower of Paris.
Executive Chef Ralf Bauer started making the villages at Christmastime years ago to recreate the holiday scenery of his native Germany.
They've gotten bigger since. This year he added a pagoda from Yakushiji Temple in the ancient Japanese capital of Nara. Hawaii's own Iolani Palace — the only royal palace in the U.S. — is also featured.
The hotel will display the village through Jan. 2. The hotel says the gingerbread isn't meant to be eaten and won't be served.
