Wagfest Memorial Event coming to Crystal Lanes. What to know about Corning fundraiser

Next Saturday the Wagfest Memorial Fund will be holding a fund-raising bowling event at Crystal Lanes that’s just a bit different than most of the fund-raising events that are held each year at the local bowling center.

Instead of using a tournament type of format, this organization is going with a bowling for fun type of event. The event will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 13. For a $20 fee, you can come with a group or with a partner or by yourself and you will get three hours of open bowling that will include shoe rental, if needed, and a door prize ticket. The organization will also run a 50/50 raffle and sell tickets for many other prizes. Food and drink will also be available for purchase.

For those of you who may not be familiar with the Wagfest Organization, it is a completely volunteer run non-profit local organization formed in the honor and memory of Paul ‘PJ’ Wagner, who lost his life in an automobile accident in 2017. They help local families pay some of the unforeseen expenses such as extra funeral home and burial costs after the loss of a child. To date, in their short existence, they have helped 15 families and their goal is to help as many families as they can who need financial assistance.

Last month the Wagfest held a corn hole fund raiser at the Horseheads Elks Club and raised over $1,400. They hope to raise at least that much with their event at Crystal Lanes. If you can’t make it to this event, maybe consider a donation. For more information on the Wagfest, visit their website (just google it) or phone them at (607) 259-7169.

Rice, Farr grab scoring honors

After the scoring explosion from Crystal Lanes last week, it was a rather quiet, fairly routine week. There were no honor scores, and coming close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. A few bowlers did come close.

Cheryl Rice notched scoring honors for the ladies this week with a solid showing during action in the Giardina Building & Remodeling Ladies League. She opened the night with a 237 game and chased that with scores of 215 and 230 for a 682 series. She was joined by three other ladies in this league over 600. Beth Smith capped a 675 series with a 268 game while Deon Frost carded a 543 set and Gwen Bain rolled a three-deuce 655 series.

Runner-up honors for the ladies this week goes to Hailey Blencowe out of the Savona Storage Ladies League. Hailey put together games of 212, 237 and 227 for a 676 series.

In other ladies league action, Heather Farr’s 626 series topped the Gabe’s Grille Ladies League while Deon Frost and Anita Gennosa both went over 600 in the Joey’s Contracting Mixed League. Deon had a 617 while Anita came away with a 604 set. Anita also topped the ladies in the Gary Cortright Memorial Mixed League with a 618 series.

One more strike could have done it for Chad Farr in the Tire World of Corning Men’s League, but a couple of stubborn 10 pins kept him away from the coveted 800 circle. As it was, a 792 series is nothing to shake a stick at. Unless, of course, it’s a big stick. After opening with a 268 game, Chad rolled a 245 before closing the night with a 279 game for his 792 and weekly honors.

This league proved to be the highest scoring league of the week with seven other guys going over the 700 mark. Ron Gunn fired a 788 series with games of 297, 246 and 245 which was good enough for runner-up honors. A nasty split on his first shot in the tenth of game three cost Gunny his 800 series. Joe Crown opened a 758 set with a 290 game while Rick Stewart capped a 745 series with a 279 game. Bob Putman rolled a 743 while Tim DeGraw came up with a 717 and Ron Bush whacked a 709 that featured a 278 game. Mike Brewster capped the sevens in this league with a 703 series.

Four fellows topped the 700 mark in the Hatfield Real Estate League. Nick Dobson led this quartet with a 753 that included games of 279 and 278 while Jason Huntley reached a 729 total. Derik Lisi and Paul Brion both finished the night with scores of 709.

In other men’s action, Mike Bartholff topped the Addison Men’s League with a 745 series while Ron Gunn fired a 712 set. Jake Blanford topped the Jubilee Foods Mixed League with a 713 and Jamie Kennedy paced the Cortright Mixed League with a 711 series.

Over on the senior circuit, an even dozen fellas topped 600 in the Chilson-Wilcox Senior Men’s League. The five top scores were thrown by the ‘junior’ seniors contingent and two of them were substitutes.

Al Farr was the ringleader of this group as a permanent sub for the remainder of the season. He converted games of 218, 236 and 231 into a league leading 685 series. Bruce Stanton finished with that devilish score of 666 while John Stermer posted a 659 total. Mike Donovan capped a 659 series with a 256 game while sub Doug Mosher pieced together a 650 total.

Judd McAtte continued his steady pace with a 622 series while Charlie Fish caught a 619 and Tim DeGraw subbed his way to a 610 total. Shannon Proctor notched a 609 series while Jack Wagon rolled a 605 and Ken Mattison came away with a 603 set. Guy Hill became the 12th member of this dirty dozen with a 601 series.

In other senior league action, Mike Stanley paced the Striking Seniors Mixed League with a 647 series that featured a 244 game while Glenn Hanratty rolled a 608.

A couple of junior bowlers topped six in the Spring Adult/Junior Mixed League. Camryn Stefanini fashioned a 662 series while Dante White posted a 608 series.
