Wabash River safety alert for July 6-12

Jul. 1—Logansport Municipal Utilities is advising the public on July 6 to not use the Wabash River downstream from 1400 W. Wabash Ave. for boating, fishing, swimming or any other activities that could put them in contact with the water.

From 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Logansport's Wastewater Treatment Plant will be repairing the chlorine contact tank. LMU advises people suspend all water-based activities downstream from the plant until July 12.

During this period, waters discharged by the Wastewater Treatment Plant into the river won't be treated by the chlorination process that removes pathogenic bacteria.

The unchlorinated wastewater may go into the river both during the repair period and for several days after it.

People risk becoming very ill if they swim or wade in the river water or ingest it, such as through fish.
