VSP: Traffic initiative saves lives on I-95

RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — According to Virginia State Police (VSP) a new initiative is the driving force behind fewer traffic fatalities.

Virginia was among 15 states participating in the “I-95 Drive to Save Lives” traffic safety operation took place between Friday, April 19, 2024 and Sunday, April 21, 2024.

The initiative resulted in only six crashes involving injuries and no fatal crashes on the 179 miles of I-95 within the Commonwealth, according to VSP.

During the operation, additional patrol resources were positioned along I-95. Troopers issued 153 reckless driving citations. Additionally, troopers worked 50 crashes and made two DUI arrests.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and the initiative focused on all aspects of safe driving behaviors.

State police are preparing for the increase in traffic on I-95 with the summer travel season just a month away. Motorists are encouraged to drive responsibly by following the speed limit, buckling up and putting the phone down.

According to Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) there were 39 fatal traffic crashes on I-95 in 2023.
