VSP’s Operation C.A.R.E to help protect and keep drivers safe during holiday weekend

(WFXR)– Virginia State Police is reminding drivers of all ages to drive smart, safe, and sober, especially during graduation season and Memorial Day Weekend.

Last year, VSP investigated over 1,800 crashes statewide and reported nine people were killed in crashes over the holiday weekend. In response, deputies across the state will once again join law enforcement for Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E.) aimed at reducing crashes, fatalities, and injuries due to impaired driving or not wearing a seat belt.

This Memorial Day weekend, AAA Mid-Atlantic is predicting a four percent increase in travel, meaning the Commonwealth’s highways will be more crowded as people head to graduation events and holiday activities.

VSP says nearly 100 drivers cited for speeding during safety initiative along Route 58

“This is such a busy time of year for everyone, which is why it is imperative for drivers to slow down and remember to buckle up, avoid distractions and always drive sober,” said Colonel Gary T. Settle, Superintendent of the Virginia State Police. “I also cannot stress enough the importance of talking with your teenagers and young adult drivers about safe driving behaviors.”

VSP says all available state police troopers and supervisors will be on patrol through the holiday weekend to help keep traffic moving safely and responsibly.
